Obi Clutch - Kikkou and Matsu

MONIKO STORE

Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

A classic pattern of Kikkou and Matsu. The Kikkou is also called the Fortune Hexagon, this much loved design signifies long life as it resembles the tortoise shell, and the tortoise was thought to live for one thousand years in previous Japanese eras.
Matsu, the Pine Tree is believed to live for 100 years. It is a hardy plant that symbolises strength and long life. Samurai often planted these trees: it was believed that the long needle-like leaves, Matsuba, protected them from demons.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is around 40 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
